Karasuno High is a public school in Miyagi prefecture with a volleyball club that used to reach nationals and now cannot get out of the region. Old banners hang in the gym like an accusation. The nickname the area gave them, the flightless crows, started out affectionate and hardened into a description, and that is where the series opens.
The roster is a bad idea on paper: a wing spiker shorter than most of the people he blocks, a setter whose last team walked away from him, an ace who quit, and a bald second year with a chip on his shoulder. Furudate builds his season out of how badly these people fit together and how slowly that stops mattering to the scoreline.
The kit is black and orange, the crest is a crow, and the cheer from the stands is about flight. Furudate grew up in the north east and set the story there, close enough to real schools that fans have spent years hunting for the one Karasuno was drawn from. The gym, the hill and the shop at the bottom of it all have pilgrims.

KARASUNO is eight letters and comes apart cleanly. Karasu is the Japanese word for crow, and no is the common place-name ending meaning field.
