Happy hatched from an egg that Natsu and Lisanna found in a forest and raised between them, and the guild named him for what the hatching did to a room that had been arguing all morning. He is an Exceed, one of a race of winged cats, and his magic is Aera: wings that let him carry a passenger through the air for a limited stretch before he drops them.
In practice he is Natsu's transport and his heckler. He carries the dragon slayer over water, which matters enormously to somebody whose motion sickness makes boats impossible, and he keeps up a commentary on everyone else's love lives from a safe altitude. His answer to almost any order is a snapped Aye, sir. His answer to anything he disapproves of is the same word, stretched out and pointed.
The fish are not decoration. Happy negotiates for them, hoards them, and has traded away items the plot needed for one. Hiro Mashima keeps him out of the serious fights wherever possible, which is why the character works: he is the one member of the guild with nothing at all to prove.
Spelling HAPPY
No trap here, and pretending otherwise would waste a guess. HAPPY is the ordinary English word, five letters with a doubled P and a Y on the end, and the Japanese ハッピー borrows it straight back. The doubled consonant is the only thing to watch, since one P leaves you a letter short. Once the H and the Y are placed, exactly one word fits.
