Tobio Kageyama sets with more precision than anyone his age and, in middle school, used it to run his team like a machine that had not asked to be built. He demanded speed his hitters could not reach, then blamed them for missing it. In his final match they simply refused to swing, and he turned around to find nobody there. The nickname stuck as an insult.
High school hands him Hinata, a tiny wing spiker who can jump and cannot receive, and who says yes to any toss regardless of whether it is survivable. Their first quick attack works because Hinata swings with his eyes shut and trusts the ball to be where it was put. The partnership fixes nothing about Kageyama's manners and everything about his idea of the job.
Furudate keeps the arc slow and unflattering. Kageyama learns to ask a hitter what he wants, gets it wrong, tries again, and stays rude throughout. By the national stage he is still a difficult person and a considerably better setter, which is a more honest outcome than handing him a new personality in the last volume.
Spelling KAGEYAMA
KAGEYAMA is eight letters, the longest name most Haikyu players offer, and it is the family name the game wants rather than Tobio. Three A's and an E fill every even slot, alternating with consonants the whole way. The kanji mean shadow mountain, set against Hinata, sunny place. Furudate paired those two on purpose.
