Lucy Heartfilia is the reader's way in. She turns up in the first chapter as an aspiring mage with a small collection of celestial spirit keys, gets conned by a man impersonating a famous wizard, and ends up in Fairy Tail more or less by accident. She is also the runaway daughter of a railway and trading fortune, which is not something she advertises to her new guild.
Celestial spirit magic runs on contracts. Silver keys buy minor spirits, and the twelve gold keys open the gates of the zodiac: Aquarius, Taurus, Loke and the rest, each with terms about when they can be called. Lucy collects gold keys the way other mages collect scars. Her strongest asset is that the spirits fight for her out of loyalty rather than obligation, which the series treats as the actual power.
She writes, too. The novel she is drafting runs quietly under the whole series and pays off at the end of it. Hiro Mashima built the guild around her arrival, so the early chapters explain Fairy Tail to Lucy and to the reader in the same breath, and by the time she stops needing the explanations the series has stopped handing them out.
Spelling LUCY
LUCY is four letters, an English name, and there is no romanisation trap waiting. The katakana ルーシィ carries a long vowel that English simply drops, which is why nobody writes Luucy. Y closes the row and C sits in the middle, so the awkward letter is the C rather than anything Japanese. The surname Heartfilia never appears on the board.
